Our Mission

Better Bilingual’s mission is to improve academic outcomes in multilingual classrooms through ‘language aware’ teaching. We work with educational settings so they understand both the benefits of being multilingual and how to develop the academic English for success.

Successfully collaborating with schools and partners since October 2016, we set up as a social enterprise (a Community Interest Company or CIC) in September 2020 to benefit multilingual pupils and families in our home city of Bristol in the southwest of England.

Our ongoing mission is to improve educational provision in diverse, multilingual classrooms in Bristol and nationally. We do this through consultancy, coaching and training, including ITE and CPD, as well as direct pupil teaching, assessments, action planning and resource development.

At Better Bilingual, we highly value collaboration with parents, carers and communities from diverse ethnic and linguistic heritages, as well as Bristol organisations which align with our mission. If you’d like to be involved in a multilingualism-related education project, please contact us: info@betterbilingual.co.uk

Our Director / Co-Founder, Catherine Brennan, has published a number of articles/resources for teachers and school leaders on EAL and multilingual classrooms, including:

EAL and Multilingualism Toolkit
Accessing Accurate Funding for Your EAL Pupils Through the October Census
Leading EAL in Your Primary School

Also Better Bilingual was shortlisted for The Batook Pandya Award for Inclusion at the Bristol Social Impact Awards 2024 (organised by VOSCUR)
